Hey there! It’s Friday Favorites time again, this time coming at you from the West Coast! I met Jessie while studying abroad in Copenhagen, and our connection was cemented while galavanting through Rome. Jessie has seen me through so many life transitions, and she’s my go-to email pal. She’s one of the few people who can handle my stream of conscious ramblings, a sure testament to her ability to love well and see the good in anyone. She works as a financial advisor (her email signature is ridiculously long and grown-up), and she loves spending time with her boyfriend, her mom, and her precious kitten! Take it away, Jessie!
Hi there! A few of my favorites lately…
Never Binge Again by Glenn Livingston Ph.D – This book was recommended to me by a near and dear friend. It fell into my lap and has actually changed the way I think about food and my relationship to food. I don’t want to say too much because as mentioned in the book the way we think about food is very personal, but if you are a person who sometimes gives into cravings and you would like to break that cycle, this book has very honest and tangible methods to manage those behaviors. It is a short read, the audiobook is only 3 hours, and it really could be the start of a new you.
Red Vines – Red Vines are the reason I need the book listed above. I can’t have just one, and I’d prefer 50. I think it is an injustice that it is far easier to find Twizzlers than it is to find Red Vines. Twizzlers are the watered down plastic version of Red Vines. There are few things more exciting than walking into a doctor’s office waiting room and seeing that huge jar of red vines, taking about 4 on the way in and 4 more on the way out. Red Vines are not just for Fridays but for every day. Red Vines please sponsor me.
Lo and Sons | The Catalina Deluxe – Okay, I feel really cool when I use this bag. It looks really cool, it makes me look really cool, and it’s an awesome bag. The identifying feature of this bag is the bottom zip portion of the bag, where you can store toiletries, shoes, sweaters, anything you would like separate from the top portion of the bag. This bag is perfectly carry-on size, and is very easy to organize. They come in fun colors and as time has gone on they have added more colors to the mix. Occasionally Lo & Sons they will release promotional codes, so it is definitely possible to get this bag at a cheaper price, you just have to keep an eye out.
Moroccan Oil | Restorative Hair Mask – Since I began highlighting and coloring my hair it has taken a serious beating and to top it off I have decided to grow it long, which has not helped. I really fell in love with Moroccan oil shampoo and conditioners and they changed my hair for the better. Shortly thereafter I came upon this hair mask which has REALLY changed the game. Five minutes with this on your head and you are ready to star in a commercial for hair products. The smell is so good they make a candle that smells like it, seriously, and you just can’t argue with the results. Two thumbs up, will buy again. Though it is a bit pricey it lasts a long time, so don’t let the price tag scare you away.
Bose QuietComfort 35 Wireless Headphones – Oh I love my headphones. The last time I wore these headphones I missed a bald eagle in the middle of an airport and I don’t mind because I was in my own world having a great time. I previously purchased the Beats rose gold headphones, which gave me a headache and made my ears go numb, so I returned them and bought these instead. I will NEVER look back, no offense Beats. These headphones have active noise cancellation and they really mean that. On an airplane I do not hear the whir of the engines, a sound which makes me nervous, nor do I hear the screech of a bald eagle in the middle of an airport. Just kidding, I don’t think he screeched but you know what I am saying. They fit comfortably around my head, they are easy to pair with many different devices, and no wires! These headphones are DECADENT and not much more than the highly popular Beats brand. My personal opinion, upgrade and you will not be sorry.
Fresh | Sugar Lemon Bath and Shower Gel – If the smell of lemon makes you think of childhood summer days and lemonade stands with a friend, you need this. There is nothing cleaner and crisper than the fresh scent of lemons and this body wash delivers. I really trust the Fresh brand, and I’ve developed a deep loyalty throughout the years, but it all started with this body wash. Every time I use this body wash I feel so good. I breathe deeply, I smile and I step out of the shower feeling refreshed and awake.
Chatbooks – In my opinion, Chatbooks is one of the best subscription services available. Chatbooks connects directly to my Instagram feed prints and delivers a beautiful photo album of the last 60 pictures I took. The spine of each book lists the date of the first image and the date of the last image, so 20 years from now you know exactly when those pictures were taken. For just $10 per book, I feel that I am immortalizing precious memories the same way my grandparents used to when they handmade family photo albums. In addition to the Instagram subscription, they have a Facebook subscriptions. Earlier this year I created a personalized chatbook compiled with my favorite recipes and printed a few to give to friends. They have collaborations with fun companies like Rifle Paper Co. and Disney to create beautiful book covers. I love holding my memories in my hand, instead of just on a computer screen, so I feel this service is not only incredibly affordable but very precious.
And in addition, this holiday season I’d encourage you to give generously to relief foundations or organizations dear to you. This past week my beloved California has been ravaged by fires. Californian’s woke up to the news that they must leave all of their belongings and precious memories behind and evacuate immediately with no warning. In Ventura County 96,000 acres have burned, displacing thousands and burning hundreds of homes and businesses. Please consider donating to California Wildfire relief through the American Red Cross, which goes to victims of the fires all across California. You can also donate directly to the Thomas Fire Fund, which will benefit those in Ventura County and the surrounding areas (you can also donate by phone – call (805) 485-6288 or text UWVC to 4144 or by check – send by mail to United Way, 702 County Square Dr., Suite 100, Ventura, CA 93003. Write “Thomas Fire Fund” in the memo). Humans were not the only ones impacted by the fires. Many animals were displaced from homes or moved to shelters in order to keep them safe, while their owners took shelter in evacuation centers. Please consider donating to local humane societies such as the Humane Society of Ventura County or the Los Angeles Animal Care Foundation.
