One of my dearest friends just got engaged, and as I was thinking of advice to share on how to choose the right wedding photographer, I realized that I was basically just writing a whole blog post to her! I can say with confidence that I’m still 100% in love with our wedding photos, so here’s a little bit of how I made that decision and some of the tricks and tips I’ve picked up along the way! Thanks for the inspiration, sweet Molly, and congratulations!
GIVE IT PLENTY OF THOUGHT
It sounds cheesy, but your wedding will last for a single day, while the photographs will last a lifetime! But in all seriousness, time does a number on our memories, and having these heirlooms will ensure that this day lives on. Don’t just stop at the first photographer you find on Google or through a friend of a friend. Do your homework here! I logged a lot of hours stalking photography blogs and looking through portfolios and came up with a wide range of options.
CONSIDER THEIR STYLE
When you see pretty wedding photos on Pinterest or Instagram, what draws you to those images? Do you find yourself gravitating towards lighter styles or darker? Do you want timeless poses, intimate moments, or a mix of both? Once you start to think about how you want your wedding day captured, start digging through portfolios of different photographers on your list. See what you like about their styles and what resonates with you. By and large, the work displayed on their websites will look like the work they’ll provide on your wedding day. Make sure it feels true to your style! This helped me choose from that large list, and from there I reached out to my top choices.
CONSIDER THE EXPERIENCE
Whether a phone call or in-person meeting, you want to make a personal connection to your photographer. They’re one of the few wedding vendors that will be by your side the entire day, and you want to hire someone who is on your team and easy to get along with! At certain points throughout the day, I might have my hands up a bride’s dress trying to wrangle a bustle, so it goes without saying that we should be comfortable around each other! Having those connections allows you to determine whether you’d want to spend your whole wedding day with this person, which is a really big factor in the overall decision!
GO WITH YOUR GUT
There’s a lot of debate on whether it’s best to hire your dream photographer or to hire a friend. And trust me, I get both sides! My advice is to find someone whose style draws you in but is also super funny at your in-person consult. Or choose that friend of a friend who just started a few years back but is working her tail off and you love what her style has developed into. I firmly believe you shouldn’t have to compromise between style and experience. On your wedding day, you want someone who is both talented and nice, and lucky for you, those aren’t mutually exclusive things! As you start to reach out to different photographers, your gut will help guide you in terms of finding that balance!
