I’ve always been a reader of books and a writer of journals, but lately, I’m dragging my feet just to put words on the page, or fingers to the keyboard. I yearn for balance between sharing beautiful things and sharing hard things, and it’s probably because I’m still looking for beauty in a lot of the hard things.
What sometimes gets tricky is that you really only see the bits of pretty things, and in a world of carefully curated feeds, it’s hard to get a grip on what’s real and authentic. If you looked at my latest Instagram posts, you’d see a nice manicure, dinner with my husband, cute clients, and adorable puppies. And while all of those things are true of my life, there’s also a lot of less-than-pretty stuff that gets left on the cutting room floor. I live my entire life behind the scenes of those cute little squares. So in a spirit of transparency, here’s few of those bits and pieces to share.
- Let’s start with the ugly, shall we? The CPA we hired to file our taxes for 2015 forgot to file our tax returns. We discovered this when our 2016 tax returns were rejected, followed a rabbit trail through the IRS website, and found that nothing had been filed for 2015. Surprise! I was initially so so upset and alternated between yelling and crying for a good half hour. After Joe talked me off the ledge, we regrouped, shared our extreme frustration with said CPA guy, and things are (supposedly) being cleared up as we speak. But holy hell, let’s never do this again.
- I did a Whole 30 at the beginning of this year and felt freaking awesome after a month without sugar, dairy, or grains. Like, better sleep, better skin, and zero bloating. It was glorious. But I have since crashed and burned into my old sugar habits and my energy levels and sleep are once again suffering. This is probably an indicator that another sugar fast is in order, but I just can’t bring myself to it yet.
- I just started learning a new Client Management System and while I’ve got a long way to go with it, I’m so excited to be providing a better client experience! We’ve had some issue with our mail being delivered to the wrong address or not being delivered at all, so Kait Bailey Photography is getting a 21st-century update and going all digital. It’ll be so wonderful once the transition is complete, but right now it’s pretty messy and looks like watching a lot of tutorials and bribing photografriends for help over coffee.
- Joe and I never quite figured out our weekly schedules this spring. If I had a girls night on Monday and Thursday, he had guys group on Tuesday and soccer on Sunday. Throw in weekends out of town, and forget it. Now that wedding season is back in the mix, I’m extra sensitive to time spent away from one another and trying to be more diligent about creating space for quality time. But it’s definitely not easy!
So that’s my behind the scenes story these days. While it doesn’t always feel bright and shiny, I’m working on finding the beauty in it all the same. After all, no grit, no pearl.
