It is no secret that I’m a product lover. Tell me that something will make my pores look smaller and you can have all my money. And while it took me entirely too long to break up with my dependence on makeup, I’ve now come to enjoy playing with makeup and skincare, not as an oppressive requirement, but as a way to pamper and care for myself. You can find more posts containing my rambling thoughts about beauty and products and all things in between, starting in 2012 and working your way forward – 1 . 2 . 3 . 4 .
In my most recent beauty post, I began to document my quest towards natural, conscious beauty. I want to be minimal with my ingredient lists and generous with myself. This is all completely subjective, of course, and relies totally on opinion. But I’m a woman obsessed with articles where people say what’s in their handbags or medicine cabinets, so indulge me here, if you will.
This time I’m breaking down my skincare and makeup routines, and including only products that I love and have been using consistently for at least two months. I’ll also include some old faithful backups that have worked for me, but in general, all new products that I’m purchasing are significantly healthier. I’m not tossing out my Naked palette just yet, but once I’ve used up a product, I’m replacing it with a cleaner version. And because you’ll notice right away my obsession with Glossier – CLICK HERE for 20% off your first purchase. I promise you won’t regret it 😉
So, let’s dive in!
If I’m not showering, I’ll use Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser to clean my face, followed by Super Glow and Super Bounce serums, also by Glossier. The cleanser is super gentle and doesn’t dry my skin, and I totally love the rose scent. The serums are also wonderful – I know it’s lame to say I love all Glossier products, but I really truly do. Super Bounce will change your life. The serums are followed by moisturizer – Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer, completed by a layer of SPF with Supergoop Everyday Sunscreen, which is super nice and smooth under makeup (I use it in place of primer).
Once my face is moisturized and happy, I go for the makeup. I usually go bare-faced on weekends, but during the work week, this is my typical routine.
It all starts with a good base – Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint. It’s super sheer coverage, so if I’m looking for something heavier I’ll go for Honest Company Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer. If I want to look completely flawless, Arbonne Perfecting Liquid Foundation is key. But 95% of the time, I’m all about the Skin Tint. Glossier Stretch Concealer covers any stray spots and the ever-present under-eye circles. I use Glossier Haloscope for a quick swipe of highlight, and ILIA Multi-Stick for blush. The Honest Company Luminizing Powder is for the rare occasion I feel like extra bronzer or highlight. Brows are a must, and I always go for Glossier Boy Brow. If I’m going for a no-makeup makeup look, I’ll stop there. Usually, I take the extra step and smudge Honest Company Truly Velvet Eyeliner in Cocoa or Black followed by Honest Company Truly Lush Mascara. Occasionally I’ll swipe on some eyeshadow from my Urban Decay Naked Palette or from Mally Evercolor Shadow Stick. And that’s a five-minute face if I’m not fussing over eyeshadow!
Now, lips are a whole other thing. I collect and hoard lip products. I’m not loyal to any one brand, but these are some of my favorites, any of which you might find rolling around my purse. For an everyday look, I’ll use Glossier Generation G in Cake, Like, or Crush. Dior Addict Lip Glow in Coral is another standby with a nice flavor. I’ve always got at least one Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in literally any color (I’ve gone through several). My very favorite gloss is Sugar Shine Lip Treatment, which they used to make in more colors. My old faithful is Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, and my standby pop of red is Nars Lipstick in Heatwave. My favorite balm is a tie between good old Aquaphor and Glossier Balm Dot Com in rose or cherry.
I feel like I should add that while this is a giant list with a ton of products, this all takes me a grand total of 10-15 minutes in the morning. I’ve got to be business casual by 7 AM, so trust me, we’re speeding through this whole thing.
I normally shower in the evening, so I’ll use a scrub from Lush while in there. I go for Angels on Bare Skin when I want a gentle cleanse, or Dark Angels for when I want to really scrub those pores. I’ll use a drop of Milky Jelly Cleanser first to remove makeup, but then I’m all in with the scrub. After my face is clean, I layer on Acure Rose Argan Oil and then slather on Glossier Priming Rich Moisturizer. When I want even more hydration, I’ll add a layer of Glossier Moisturizing Moon Mask as an overnight mask. I swear, I wake up with perfect feeling skin after all of that rich moisture! Once a week or so I’ll throw on a Glossier Mega Greens Galaxy Mask before my bedtime routine, to keep things clear.
Well, this can be short and sweet – I haven’t found a single hair product that I LOVE since going the clean route. I’m trying out some products from the Honest Company, and while I liked them up front, I feel pretty meh about them now. So if you’ve got any hair tips, give me a shout! Worth noting on the shower front – I’m 100% now and forever on the Dr. Bronner’s All One Bar Soap. It’s got a great feel and lather and isn’t too drying. Plus I can buy it at Trader Joe’s, so it’s a one stop deal.
The New Guys
These are a few things that I’ve just added to my routine, but they’re already showing some progress, so I thought I’d add them here for posterity’s sake. First up – Lipsense. There’s no way I needed another lip product, but I got sucked into the hype and the idea of longwearing lip color. So far I am really digging it, but it did take some getting used to (super chapped lips after the first couple of wears!). Next, Shea Moisture Volumizing Mascara – I love the Honest Company mascara, but this is a little bit cheaper and more easily accessible (I actually cancelled my Honest Company beauty bundle, but might pick it back up). This gives nice volume, but does tend to flake a tiny bit at the end of a long day. And of course, I immediately bought Glossier Cloud Paint as soon as it came out. It’s a new twist on cream blush and I’m totally loving the shades Beam and Dusk.
Wow, friends! That was a lot. You deserve a medal if you made it through this whole post. Pretty please let me know if you end up trying anything I’ve included, and give me all your advice on sulfate-free/natural hair products!
Happy moisturizing <3
